Visiting Friends

Remember our wonderful sign?
Two years ago we met John and Karen Cockrell at Rocky Mountain National Park.  They were hosting there for the summer and we spent about 10 days in the park.  We found we had a lot in common and exchanged e-mails and phone numbers.  Two years later we all ended up in Colorado!  We are at the National Wildlife Refuge in Monte Vista and they are helping out a friend who owns an RV park near Coaldale, about 90 miles north of us.

As we passed through a narrow mountain pass on our way north, we came across this sign!!

We started out at their RV park, which is right next to the Arkansas River.  We watched several rafters float by, and saw several fly fishermen trying their luck. Then we headed to Westcliffe for lunch.  The road to Westcliffe follows a beautiful valley with lots of farms and ranches.

  1. Is that a single family home.... or ...resort? Is it all attached? Quite a layout! What Refuge are you at? Looks like a beautiful area.

  2. Hi Sharon-

The pictures are of the Beckwith Ranch which was started in 1869 by two brothers from Maine(!!). At one time they had 7,000 cattle, the largest herd in Colorado. Most of it has been sold off, but some folks bought the ranch house and outbuildings and it now belongs the the Colorado Heritage Association.

We are in southern Colorado at the San Luis Valley NWR Complex. We spend most of our time at the Monte Vista and Alamosa NWR's.
