An Unwelcome Visitor

I was in my sandals and headed down the stairs when I spotted something out of place on the entry mat. I retreated into the trailer and called Teri over to see our new visitor.

Can't see it too well. How about this one??

I am not a "The only good snake is a dead snake" kind of guy, but this one was a little too close for comfort.  So the snake was dispatched.  Here is the rattle.

Hopefully this is a one-time thing!!

  1. i'll bet you check those steps before you go down them for a long time! If it were me I would be staying in the house for a long time!

  2. That is one thing we don't have here at Arapaho NWR, in Waldon, CO, is rattlesnakes. The only snake here are gartersnakes. So when we go traipsing through the weeds we don't worry a bit. But the elevation here is 8400 feet.

  3. We are at 7500 feet, but much farther south so perhaps those two things make the difference. There have been a few rattlesnakes spotted around the refuge already this year.

And yes Penny, we are spending much more time staring at the ground. I'm used to looking up all of the time!!

  5. Good grief. Forgot about rattlesnakes. If I were in Texas (or New Mexico) I'd think about them, but didn't realize you'd have them up there. Read the conversation between you and Kurt and guess the elevation and how far S/N you are must make the difference.

Thank God you saw it before it decided to strike!
