Vacation - Day 5

Our boat trip out to Petit Manan Island to view sea birds was delayed two days because of weather. But, just like the weathermen back home, they can’t seem to predict the weather in Maine either!

Our day was suppose to be ‘perfect’ according to Captain Robertson. We weren’t fooled and all wore our long johns and coats. Captain Robertson was dressed on the light side (shorts, t-shirt, and sandals!) By the time we got to the island he had found a sweatshirt to put on.

The island is managed by the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge which is responsible for protecting the nesting habitat for seabirds.

The light tower is now fully automated and maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The trip out to the island took about an hour. It was just the four of us, plus the captain, on a 35 foot lobster boat. Once we got to the Island we spent quite a long time taking pictures. Captain Robertson had his hands full keeping the boat where he wanted it but he did a great job and we were able to get fabulous looks at the birds.

Arctic Tern

To be continued (Puffins, Guillemots, and more!).
